Transcript for NBA star Dwight Howard’s mission to change social media
We will turn now to social media, it can be a great way for all of us to share our lives but unfortunately and sometimes all too often it also opens the doors to bullying and criticism that can be really tough to handle but a new app pixstory hopes to help change the narrative and instead, yeah, bring some much-needed joy into our lives and there is a familiar face leading the charge, slam dunk champion and eight-time NBA all-star Dwight Howard, and Dwight is joining us now to tell us all about it. Dwight Howard, welcome to the show. Thank you for being with us. Hey, Amy, thank you so much for having me on. I'm so excited to be here today. We're so excited to have you here. We're going to get to the app in just a moment, but I got to ask, we're just a few weeks away from the NBA playoffs, tell us what you think's going to happen? Well, I believe that our Philadelphia 76ers are going to have great, great playoffs and I believe we're going to win the championship, and I'm looking forward to hoisting up the trophy and just having a parade in Philadelphia, you know, that's been the biggest thing on my mind, is just -- You're manifesting that right now. I feel it. I feel the power of that and you're saying it will happen. Let's turn to pixstory. Tell me about this app. What does it do? How does it work? Well, pixstory represents truth and accountability. And I really believe that there's so much, you know, hate and just things that are not positive on the internet, and I feel like this app will bring more positivity to our community and our families and I really believe that through this app, we'll get to see a lot of change, and peace in our families and our neighborhoods and our society. How do you stop the trolling? How do you stop the hate? What makes this app different? Well, I don't necessarily think you can stop hate or stop strolling. People are going to do that every day, but on this app, one thing that we have done is we've managed the algorithms of those messages, and those trolls and those people who want to spew out hate, and we just want to cover it with love. Love covers all. And you know, we can't get rid of all of the hate. We can't get rid of anything that is negative. But we want to balance it out. And we want to let social media be used the way it was meant for. And that's positivity. And it also gives me and other basketball players an opportunity to speak with fans around the world and just kind of give some love and some positivity, and just kind of balance out the hate and you know, all of the negative things that we've had in our world. I love this, because I love to use social media for inspiration and encouragement, supporting everybody, but a few bad apples spoil it for everyone else, and you're the face of the app, I know you're sharing your own personal messages on it, why was this so important to you? Have you experienced something, or someone you love experienced something traumatic? I'm just curious why you got so involved and wanted to make this part of your mission in life. Yes, well, I, through social media, have been in the NBA for 17 years, and I've dealt with a lot of hate and negativity, you know, I've had experiences on the internet where I've been bullied, internet bullying, and my family, my friends, and we want to change that, we want to lead with love, we want to lead with our hearts, and myself, the owner of the app, who we've been in talks with over a year, and the biggest thing is just bring more positivity and unify our on people. And just also I ended up playing forward for the Philadelphia 76ers which is the city of brotherly love, and it's all about love and positivity, and Philadelphia, and we want to spread that love, that positivity, and that joy, through pixstory, and also just make sure we always spread the truth and I think that's what people need. Dwight, thank you so much for what you're doing, for using this incredible platform you have, you know, people look up to you in so many ways, and so to lead with love, to take a stand against hate, it is so important for everyone to see someone like you doing that, so thank you so much, we want to let everyone know the pixstory app is available for download on apple and android devices. Dwight Howard, hey, I'm rooting for you, all right and your 76ers, thank you for being with us today. I might get some hate in the studio for that but I'm on your side. Thank you. We just want to give everybody some more love. So let's give them a big hug and say the 76ers will do it. Dwight Howard, thank you so much. There is much more ahead
